At its core, Sol Burst features rotating pattern wheels driven by a descending weight. The real magic happens when a stepper motor and micro-computer work together to raise the weight at just the right moment, ensuring a continuous and serene flow of motion. When the weight reaches its lowest point, the motor ‘wakes up’, lifts it back up, and then rests until it’s time to lift again—similar to the winding mechanism in a grandfather clock.

Flipping the on switch gets things started. The weight is lifted, and gravity takes over, allowing the sculpture to continue its hypnotic spin for about an hour before the process repeats.

Crafted from imported Baltic birch, every piece of wood in Sol Burst showcases the stunning natural grain, untouched by paint but carefully sanded, stained, and treated to preserve its beauty and durability. The wood is protected with multiple coats of urethane, ensuring it stands up to UV light and humidity while maintaining that rich, organic warmth.

The pattern wheels themselves are driven by a durable steel spring belt—far superior to rubber belts, which can degrade over time. This not only ensures that Sol Burst’s motion remains smooth and fluid, but also guarantees its longevity, keeping the sculpture working beautifully for years to come.
